The definitive edition of the critically acclaimed sci‑fi RPG, with improved performance and a higher level cap.
9/10
The quintessential The Outer Worlds experience that I've wanted all along for my PS5.
The Outer Worlds is a narrative-driven sci-fi RPG developed by Obsidian and published by Private Division. Originally released for PC and 8th-gen consoles, the game earned praise for its sharp satirical writing, richly detailed RPG systems, and a retro-futuristic art style that set it apart from other sci-fi titles.

Private Division brought Pingle Studio in to optimize The Outer Worlds for 9th-gen consoles. The goal: boost framerate to 60 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, fix long-session crash issues, and ensure parity with PC performance.
While The Outer Worlds stood out for its world-building and wit, players on 8th-gen consoles faced inconsistent framerates and memory-related crashes during long sessions. Private Division wanted to offer a much better experience on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, not just a compatibility patch. That’s when Pingle got into the scene.
Have a similar challenge?
We can help!
First, we focused on deep profiling and systemic optimizations to achieve a stable framerate across all environments:
Profiling across target platforms to locate GPU/CPU bottlenecks
Optimized HLODs and implemented more granular settings
Engine-level tweaks to better support performance adjustments
Built tools to optimize Niagara VFX systems (fires, waterfalls, ambient effects)
Removed DFAO artifacts impacting frame stability
Result: Locked 60 FPS across 9th-gen consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X/S). And while PC wasn’t the focus, the same engine-level improvements also boosted high-end PC performance past 90 FPS thanks to the shared codebase.
Players faced crashes after 2–3 hours of play — a major issue for story-driven sessions. We profiled memory, pinpointed garbage collection leaks during level streaming, and traced them to custom engine changes. We reworked the GC system. As a result:
Stable performance even during extended playthroughs
No more mid-session crashes or memory spikes
The original build used the same graphics and performance settings across all platforms. 9th-gen consoles, e.g., PS5 and Xbox Series X can handle more – higher resolution textures, more particles, better lighting – but a one-size-fits-all config doesn’t let them shine.
We built a system that automatically detects the platform and scene complexity, then adjusts visual effects like shadows, post-processing, and particles automatically to maintain stable performance without sacrificing visual quality.
From technically demanding titles to stylistically unique games, we've helped dozens of developers scale their games’ success on new platforms. In record times.
